For the analysis, it is important to differentiate elements that act only as shading to the building vs. elements that comprise the building envelope, which will be used for the analysis in calculating heat gain/loss and square footage. By checking the 'Shading for Sefaira' box in the type Properties window, you can correctly signify shading devices and neighboring buildings.
GUIDANCE:
Step 1: Look for items that should be shading in the Sefaira 3D views (click the Generate Sefaira Views button in the main plugin window to create the 3D views). Items that should be shading include:
- Sunshades. ** Sefaira will NOT recognize a custom sunshade family or 'Model-In-Place' items. All sunshades should be modeled as a roof, floor, or wall (set to the 'Exterior' or 'Interior' function) family type.
- Roof overhangs (click here for article on how to model roof overhangs)
- Balconies (click here for article on how to model balconies)
- Outer walls that will shade the building.
- Context neighboring buildings. ** Sefaira will NOT recognize 'Model-In-Place' items or conceptual massings. Model neighboring buildings with walls (set to the 'Exterior' or 'Interior' function), roofs, or floors.
Step 2: Select the item you would like to designate as shading. With the item selected, check the 'Shading for Sefaira' box in the item Properties window. The filter applied to the element will change to a gray hatched material.
Note: If the 'Ignore for Sefaira' box is also actively checked (with a black checkmark; not gray), the item will be ignored. Ignore takes precedence over shading.
